The Master of Arts Program in Philosophy

Most areas of philosophy are represented, with particular strengths in ethics (both applied and theoretical), the history of philosophy, and American philosophy. Both thesis and non-thesis options are available as well as a program of study specializing in applied ethics. Because of our excellent student-teacher ratio, graduate students enjoy small seminar sizes, individualized guidance, and easy access to the faculty. Students are given ample office space with quality computing facilities, web and e-mail access, and on-line library resources including the Philosopher’s Index and many journals. Most of our students continue on to Ph.D. programs, some to law school, and some directly into teaching.

The Department

The Department houses the Oklahoma State University Ethics Center. The Ethics Center sponsors guest speakers, symposia, and conferences, recently the 29th Conference on Value Inquiry. The Pragmatism Archive sponsors lectures and seminars given by visiting faculty and provides research support for both established scholars and graduate students working in American philosophy. The Department and the student philosophy club annually sponsors a “philosopher-in-residence” as well as runs a bi-weekly public lecture series, the latter providing graduate students a forum for presenting their own research. Many Department members are officers of professional societies, including the American Philosophical Association, Southwestern Philosophical Society, Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, William James Society and also serve on editorial boards of various journals.

LOCATION

OSU enrolls over 23,000 students on a open and attractive campus located in Stillwater, approximately sixty-five miles from both Tulsa and Oklahoma City. The town has approximately 40,000 residents, with a surprisingly broad variety of ethnic restaurants for its size. OSU has a commuter bus service, allowing students and faculty to travel to and from its Tulsa satellite campus plus a Community Bus line.
